Unipol Assicurazioni S.p.A. results from the merger of several companies, from the original Unipol (1963) to Aurora Assicurazioni (born in 2004 of the merger between Winterthur and Meieaurora) and Navale Assicurazioni (2011). Unipol Assicurazioni is 100% controlled by Unipol Gruppo Finanziario S.p.A.. This holding, which has been operating since 1 September 2007, is the result of the corporate reorganization which split the centralised and coordination functions from the commercial activities carried out by the individual companies which are part of its scope.

Unipol Assicurazioni, which ranked 4th among the Italian Life and Non-Life insurers at 31 December 2011, in 2012 started the acquisition and integration process of the Fondiaria-SAI Group, to become the first Italian Non-Life insurer (the 5th in Europe) and the 6th Life insurer. At the European level the new Unipol Group ranks 9th among the composite insurance groups.

The Unipol shares have been listed on the Stock Exchange since 1986.
